Left New York for 6 weeks in Israel with family and friends. I took these shots on the way through Queens to JFK and then from Ben Gurion on the way to Tel Aviv. Israel has always meant a lot to me. Personally, I’ve always felt at home there. Professionally, it has to do with the kinetic animation it gives to the space and place of Jewish thought and culture. Politics, of course, has a lot to do with it. Aesthetically, I like these underdeveloped, slightly dessicated places between the airports and cities. I spend a lot of time in the States reading about Israel. I wonder what it will be like following the U.S. news from over here (the NSA, the recent Supreme Court assault on the Civil Rights Act).
I remember the first time I arrived to NY and was absolutely shocked at how run down everything looked. In the movies it all looks so glamorous. Very far from the rusty, shabby, old metals and poor neighborhoods that welcome you on the way from JFK.
i actually have grown to like those run-down spaces, like the old garages and warehouses in Manhattanville now being hyper-developed by Columbia University. these places are like godless little wildernesses.
