New art from China and about China exploring migration between the regions that constitute contemporary China: especially between mainland China and Taiwan, but also Hong Kong and other places. Most of the works felt lonely, focused around place, places between place like islands, and the passages between them. In Phantom Island, a little green artificial island is trucked through what I think is downtown Taipei and let out to sea. These were a few of the things at this compact little show on a walk down 13th St last Sunday. They are at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design near the corner with 5th Avenue, right down the street from the old Greek-revival facade of the venerable Village Presbyterian Church. For as long as the exhibit is showing, they are part of New York, a place with its own Chinese diaspora.
