Modern-Medieval (Christian Architectural Pieces) (New York Cloisters)

066065

Pieces of medieval Christianity, re-constructed bit by bit. “Buildings from Sant Miquel de CuixàSant Guilhèm dau Desèrt, Bonnefont-en-Comminges, Trie-en-Bigòrra, and Froville were disassembled stone-by-stone and shipped to New York City, where they were reconstructed and integrated by [Charles] Collens into a cohesive whole by simplifying and merging the various medieval styles in his new buildings” (wikipedia). It’s supposed to look organic, but the whole thing is synthetic. Rockefeller paid for the whole thing. Frederick Olmstead designed Fort Tryon Park, which surrounds the museum. Medieval and faux-medieval, the assemblage hangs over, a part of and apart from a corner of the modern city.
