St John The Divine Construction Site (II)

There’s so many interesting thing about the new real estate development going up on the grounds sold by St. John the Divine to a local developer –the re-purposing of property in a dense urban environment, the transformation of a neighborhood of some historical significance, social trust and civic institutions, expensive real estate. What strikes me as just as important are the visual scaling in the spacing of machinery alongside the wall of sacred space. I like the massive grey of the stone north wall of the Cathedral along W.113th St, how it dwarfs the orange excavator at work below on digging out new foundations; and on Morningside Drive, the big black dump truck hauling itself out with waste from the deep pit. Take a look while you can at sights you’ll never see again, not for a long time.
