American Jewish Ruin (The Catskills) (Diaspora Decrepitude)

catskills

I nice bit of American Jewish social history cum nostalgia, this article in the Forward tells the by now familiar tale about the life and death story of the once great Catskill resorts and casinos. Jump straight to the slideshow of Marisa Scheinfeld’s photographs on p. 5 of the article. The photographs highlight the shell of a space and the decrepitude of place. Disapora is not always what it’s sometimes cracked up to be in some sectors of the Jewish intelligentsia –or it is while it lasts. As a form of storytelling, these photographs would count as “epilogue.”
