I like these big calligraphic abstractions, the way they look, the nestling of saturated black ink and white space, the gestural writing brought into the elegantly paneled Chinese galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the way the paintings sit behind glass, which mirrors reflections in the exhibition space. They echo works by Franz Kline, but the largeness of the black color volumes seem more intentional. The wall panel draws attention to the way in which the paintings untether the free physical act of writing from textuality and textual meaning. This untethering intensifies the event character of each work, alone and in tandem with each other.
Very engaging… you may also want to check out Wenda Gu’s work— another Chinese born artist. The work is similar in certain ways. Wenda is known for massive installations of calligraphic banners made from hair. Thanks for the post.
