Yes, the synagogue is a public institution. But compared to in Israel, diaspora Judaism is not really social. It’s indoors. Except here and there, diaspora Judaism doesn’t happen on “the street.” It has no “space of appearance.” As “a Zionist,” I tend for the most part to think that that’s not such a great thing, most of the time. that’s the real tension tho I think to move out of the confines of the closed/private realm seems to lead to being caught up in the trends of the public/secular markets, no?
