That Empty Church in Rural Maryland

I’ve been driving by this church for some several years now on my annual drives down to rural Maryland. This time there was time to get out of the car to get a feel for the place. I’ve always been attracted by the sight. There’s a vernacular stateliness to this dead Baptist church on MD440 in the northeast corner of the state not far from US1. The wood construction is beginning to show stress as the brush begins to take over.

It’s a good thing you did – give it another decade or so and nature might finish off what it’s started and all that’ll be left will be pictures.
I don’t know … there’s something … poetic about it. And sad. A group of people believed that the effort they had put into saving the money, buying the materials, building the church, building the body of believers up would create a mighty work through which God could be praised and generations would come to faith. An empty church is like somebody’s dream that has died, somebody’s hopes that have been dashed.
