My dear friend Shaul Magid is working on a major project on Meir Kahane. Deep in the archives, he has been particularly interested in the JDL during its heyday in the late 1960s and 1970s. Drawn to extreme expression, Shaul thinks that the future of the American Jewish community and American Judaism lies always at the radical margin. He posted this photo from 1969 on FB. Not sure what he sees in them, I think they look like morons. Going directly to the heart of our longstanding disagreements about liberals and radicals, I am prepared to generalize from this very particular case about the comedic aspect of radical positioning.
It all depends on how you define “radical.” The word comes from the Latin “Radicus,” meaning to get at the root of the problem. Now, it means like something wild and crazy.
