Deciding not to do departmental paperwork today, I went to the Met to see the Michelangelo and Hockney shows. Wandering around on my way out I stepped into the main foyer of the European galleries to meet this fetching baroque David by Guido Cagnacci. Wikipedia informs us that after more devotional works, he turned to private salon paintings, which “often depicted sensuous naked women from thigh upwards, including Lucretia, Cleopatra, and Mary Magdalen.” I think this David, produced in 1655, would fall under that category.
