“I cannot be grasped in the here and now. For my dwelling place is as much among the dead as the yet unborn. Slightly closer to the hear of creation than usual. But not nearly close enough”
–Paul Klee, catalogue from a 1920 exhibition
Above is the New Angel framed in red now at the Jewish Museum, and below upside down.
Like many of Klee’s creatures, the New Angel is balanced on a bridge. Not history, and not redemption or messianic twaddle, the New Angel is an emblem of creation suspended over the face of the deep.
