2 Self-Righteous Israeli Men (Gaza 2014)

self righteous

I thought this looked funny. As if arguing only with each other, two well-known columnists for Haaretz represent the the center-left and left-left old guard Ashkenazi elite. One man is just as self-righteous, just as macho and aggressive as the other man. “We’re Right,” Ari Shavit declares. Gideon Levi writes, “Great, Dead Children.”

Both are completely irrelevant to Israeli politics and public opinion. Their preachings to push for fake peace at all costs are the main reason for Hamastan in Gaza and the deaths of those children. At least one of them (Ari Shavit) has had the wisdom and courage to admit everything he preached for and believed in turned out to be wrong (Palestinian state, giving the Golan Heights to Syria etc.). Didn’t make him less irrelevant, but I give credit where credit is due.

Ari Shavit is a mainstream Israeli (today that means a far right fascist) Gideon Levy is one of the fe w who call for reason in all this madness, And he says the most extreme things because somebody goddamn, has to say them

I think they both look simply and only through the lens of Israel, what’s good for Israel, what Israel does. The image of Shavit’s “Israeliness,” the idea that there are no other actors or active agents that matter, for good or for bad makes the analysis provincial. That’s why I almost always prefer Zvi Barel’s analysis.
