The next meeting of the Society of Jewish Ethics will be held on January 9-12, 2020, at the Renaissance Washington Downtown in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics. The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, May 31, 2019.
Proposals dealing with any aspect of Jewish ethics—theoretical or applied, classical or contemporary—are welcome. We seek proposals on any topic, including projects that utilize philosophical, historical, social scientific, cultural studies, literary, or critical theoretical approaches to matters of Jewish ethics. Proposals way be for either single papers or panels with multiple papers. While our call for papers is open, we especially welcome proposals addressing issues such as sexual ethics (especially in the context of #metoo), criminal justice (with a focus on racialization and mass incarceration), bioethics and health policy, economic justice and business ethics, environmental ethics, ethics and law, animal ethics, the rabbinate and power, as well as the relationship between Jews and the Genocides of Others.
This year, we are particularly interested in presentations dealing with pedagogy, especially in its role as a tool to directly combat marginalization. What does it look like to teach against supersessionism? Against antisemitism? Against racism, sexism, or ableism? Against homophobia or transphobia? Against xenophobia or Islamophobia? What specific responsibilities does a teacher have in these areas? Presentations might also include innovative syllabi in ethics-related disciplines. We are also interested in presentations that highlight activism, for example, the role of Jewish ethicists as activists and consultants, or the intersection of the study of Jewish ethics and activist practice. Panel proposals involving members of the Society of Christian Ethics and Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics are particularly welcome.
All proposals should include: a tentative title, an abstract (500-700 words), a selected bibliography of between 5 and 10 sources, and the contact information of the presenter (name; institutional affiliation, if any; phone number; and e-mail address). Panel proposals should include this contact information for all participants. All papers are reviewed anonymously. A limited number of partial travel scholarships are available, with preference given to graduate students; for more information see: societyofjewishethics.org/scholarships_info
The Society of Jewish Ethics Annual Meeting runs concurrently with that of the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics. We encourage authors to submit their completed papers for publication in the Journal of Jewish Ethics. Papers presented as SJE papers are also eligible for publication in the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics. All presenters must become members of the SJE.
Proposals should be sent via e-mail to: admin@societyofjewishethics.org
Questions about the conference may be sent to Rebecca Epstein-Levi and Amanda Mbuvi: sjeprogramchairs@gmail.com
The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, May 31, 2019.
