Political Theology

In  synagogue today, the supplemental Scriptural reading (Haftorah) included:

Ezekiel 29:3

O Pharaoh king of Egypt

Might monster, crouching in you channels,

Who said,

“Mine is my Nile;

I made it for myself.”

Why is God so violent in the Hebrew Bible? Carl Scmitt and the “political theologians” have it all backwards. Totalitarian power does not reflect or secularize the ominipotence of God. In the chapter from which this verse is taken, the violence of God reflects and stands up to the violence of empire.
