Evangelii Gaudium (New Liberal Religion) (Pope Francis)

francis

Lost in the attention given to the recent exhortation by Pope Francis was that the document, Evangellii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel) (2013) is a document about church mission, a church that “goes forth” out into the world. The vision is one of a de-centralized restructuring of the church community in social and cultural contexts defined by secularism, new religious movements, urbanism, religious pluralism, consumer culture, and market economies. While the marketplace is mentioned, capitalism itself goes unmentioned in the exhortation (p.48ff). Keywords are “share,” which is mentioned 31 times, and “justice,” which is mentioned some 35 times, with the Catholic Church and its sancta firmly in the middle of a global culture.
