Sweet Molten Little Objects (New York State Fair 2015)

038 040

Properly prepared, the deep fried confections are perfect little objects –self-contained and ready to hand, encased and encrusted in dough, and powdered in sugar. A sweet and molten danger right out of the fryer, they are hot to the touch and burn the tongue. On a friend’s advice, I sampled the deep fried Snicker, but only after the deep fried Oreo, which defines the art. I’m not a good enough a writer to describe what happens to the cookie, but has something to do with the transformation from a solid into something hot, soft, and semi-solid. The Snicker melts into a scalding pool of chocolate. Friends and readers, please don’t worry about the author’s arteries. I wasn’t eating alone. Intellectuals mock deep fried food sweet confections. Perhaps they do so to feel superior. Like my father before me, I am a “man of the people.”
