Not The Mufti of Jerusalem Sitting with David and Paula Ben-Gurion

Staring straight out into space, the subjects are sitting next to each other, not with each other. All three look pinched. One already looks beaten. Martin Kramer shared on Twitter this picture of the Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin al Husseini sitting alongside David and Paula Ben-Gurion in the early 1930s. Kramer notes the photo was discovered by Anita Shapira while working on her biography of Ben-Gurion.

Correction: In response to critics insisting that this was not the Mufti sitting next to Ben-Gurion, Martin Kramer corrects himself here, explaining that the man is Sheikh Tawfiq al-Taybi.  He’d served as a qadi, or religious judge, from 1920, working his way up through the Islamic courts around the country before reaching Jerusalem.”
