(Theta Tau) “Kike” (Syracuse University)

Re: the Theta Tau incident at Syracuse University, last week the university suspended and has since expelled the fraternity after 2 videos surfaced of fraternity members expressing homophobic, racist, misogynistic and abelist content at an induction ceremony.  In a parody of a religious ritual, the new inductee was forced to his knees pledging to maintain hatred for the fu%#ing n—‘s, sp–cs, and “most importantly, the fu%#ing kikes.” Followed were jokes about showers. What surprised me was not the racism and the problem of racism in Greek life. I was genuinely surprised by the by both the inclusion of Jews and the invisibility of Jews. What really has me flummoxed is that a great many of our students do not know the meaning of the word “kike.” You think we all know the meaning of words. It’s like anti-Semitism doesn’t even “exist.”
